Parrot Gallery

Parrot  Gallery is a project of artists and musicians worshiping at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster. Art exhibits are open for downtown Lancaster First Fridays, and regular gallery talks are scheduled with each featured artist.

In My Backyard
About the Show

In My Backyard grew out of my time spent closer to home, as I made the transition from teacher to stay-at-home mom. Three years ago we moved into a new home, with a backyard filled with flower beds. In the spring as I observed new shoots poking through the dirt, I wondered to myself what might be in store. I watched these perennials take shape and eventually bloom. Now having observed this cycle in my yard for several years, I'm struck by the rhythm, the patterns, the connection and flow from one plant to another.

Although her exhibit focuses on images from her immediate backyard, it also moves beyond it to places like Middle Creek where the snow geese migrate in the late winter, or to her favorite hiking places around Lancaster County.

About the Artist

The sixth artist to be featured since the Parrot Gallery opened last fall is printmaker Beky Weidner. Her exhibit, In My Backyard, runs August-September. Beky grew up in Ohio where her interest in art started early. She majored in art at Bethel College (KS) and took her first printmaking class there where she fell in love with the printmaking process. Beky received her teaching certification and moved to Lancaster, PA in 1995 to begin teaching art at Lancaster Mennonite High School. She spent nearly ten years there teaching a variety of art courses.

After taking several years off to raise children, Beky set up a printmaking studio in her garage. In My Backyard, is a result of the past year's work in the studio.

Currently Beky works half-time for Ten Thousand Villages as an assistant designer in the visual merchandising department. Beky is married to Larry Penner, and has two children, Zachary, age 7, and Alison, age 5.
